About Us
We are a group of like-minded anaesthetic trainees from the Yorkshire and Humber Deanery. Our aim is to reduce our environmental impact both at work and at home. We know there are others in the region with the same goals and through collaboration we hope to create ideas and projects to help make a difference.
The Problem
If you have landed here you probably have some idea of how our work in anaesthesia has a negative impact on the environment. Below we have highlighted a few of the key issues.
Anaesthetic vapour use
The anaesthetic gases, including nitrous oxide, we use in our daily practice have a significant negative environmental impact. Through awareness of the global warming potential of different gases and rationalising their use we can help to minimise this.
Waste managment
We create a huge amount of waste whilst at work and at home. Whilst a lot of this cannot be prevented, proper disposal can reduce it's ongoing impact.
Energy use
Hospitals need energy to run, but they don't need as much as they use. For example, it would make a big difference if we all switched off computers that aren't needed over night.
Transport
The nature of our training programme means often we are placed at hospitals far from home. Could you consider using public transport or lift sharing?
What can you do?
This is not an exhaustive list. Neither is it a list of instructions. Think about if you can do any of the below in your day to day life.
Reduce desflurane use
Use low-flow anaesthesia
Use TIVA
Reduce nitrous oxide use
Consider using regional anaesthesia
Use oral medications where possible
Dispose of waste responsibly
Collaborate
Educate
Stay informed
Travel responsibly
Consider your diet
